This is precisely where the oil filter comes into play: a crucial component whose performance directly affects the protection and service life of the engine.            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n<div class=\"Introduction\" data-component-id=\"Introduction\">\n    <h3 class=\"AppTitle h1 theme-reverse\"><\/h3>\n    <h2 class=\"AppTitle h1 theme-highlight\">What is the role of engine oil?<\/h2>\n    <div class=\"AppText\">In any internal combustion engine \u2013 whether in a farm tractor, a construction machine or a road vehicle \u2013 the mechanical components are subjected to intense stresses: high speeds, extreme temperatures and high pressures. <strong>Without lubrication, these components would wear out within a matter of hours.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"DiptychText\" data-component-id=\"DiptychText\">\r\n    <div class=\"DiptychText-wrapper\">\r\n        <div class=\"DiptychText-content\">\r\n            <h4 class=\"AppTitle\">Engine oil fulfils four main functions:<\/h4>\r\n            <div class=\"AppText\"><ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Lubrication:<\/strong> it forms a protective film between moving parts (pistons, camshafts, connecting rods, etc.), reducing friction and premature wear.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Cooling:<\/strong> as it circulates through the engine, it absorbs and dissipates some of the heat generated by combustion and friction, complementing the coolant circuit.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Corrosion protection:<\/strong> its additives neutralise the acids produced during combustion, thereby limiting chemical attack on metal surfaces.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Cleaning:<\/strong> it carries suspended particles and residues to the oil filter, thereby keeping the engine components clean.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul><\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"Text1Column\" data-component-id=\"Text1Column\">\r\n    <h2 class=\"Text1Column-title\">How does the oil circulate through the engine?<\/h2>        <div class=\"Text1Column-text AppText\"><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Before we can understand the importance of filtration, it is worth recalling the path that oil takes within an internal combustion engine. Far from being static, it is constantly in motion as soon as the engine is running.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><\/p>            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n<div class=\"ImageSlider\" data-component-id=\"ImageSlider\">\r\n    <div class=\"ImageSlider-wrapper\" ref=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"ImageSlider-images\">\r\n                        <div class=\"ImageSlider-image\" ref=\"images\">\r\n                <div class=\"Image\" data-component-id=\"image\">\r\n                                        <picture>\r\n                        <img class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/contenthub.hifi-filter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Slider-engine-oil-system-scheme.webp\" width=\"1440\"\r\n                            height=\"800\" alt=\"\" draggable=\"false\">\r\n                    <\/picture>\r\n                <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n        <div class=\"ImageSlider-nav\" ref=\"nav\">\r\n            <button class=\"ImageSlider-navButton --is-previous\" ref=\"previousButton\"\r\n                aria-label=\"Pr\u00e9c\u00e9dant\"><\/button>\r\n            <button class=\"ImageSlider-navButton --is-next\" ref=\"nextButton\" aria-label=\"Suivant\"><\/button>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"Text1Column\" data-component-id=\"Text1Column\">\r\n            <div class=\"Text1Column-text AppText\"><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The cycle takes place in several stages:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"[li_&amp;]:mb-0 [li_&amp;]:mt-1 [li_&amp;]:gap-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc flex flex-col gap-1 pl-8 mb-3\">\r\n \t<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>The reservoir:<\/strong> when the engine is at a standstill, the oil is stored in the sump, at the bottom of the engine.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Suction:<\/strong> as soon as the engine starts, the oil pump draws oil through a strainer, which already traps the largest impurities.<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Pressurisation and filtration:<\/strong> the pump sends the oil under pressure to the oil filter. This is where filtration in the main circuit takes place: the entire flow passes through the filter before reaching the engine components. In the most demanding applications, a portion of this flow may also be diverted in parallel to an additional bypass filter with a very high filtration fineness (detailed further on).<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> the clean, pressurised oil is then channelled through the lubrication galleries to the components under load (crankshaft bearings, camshaft, rocker arms, turbocharger, etc.).<\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\"><strong>The return flow:<\/strong> after lubricating, cooling and cleaning these components, the oil flows back down by gravity into the sump, where the cycle begins again.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">This closed circuit operates continuously, several times a minute. This is why an effective filter is so important: any particle that is not trapped circulates repeatedly through the engine and contributes to the wear and tear of its components until it is captured.<\/p>            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n<div class=\"Text1Column\" data-component-id=\"Text1Column\">\r\n    <h2 class=\"Text1Column-title\">Why does engine oil become contaminated?<\/h2>        <div class=\"Text1Column-text AppText\">The main sources of contamination include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Combustion residues:<\/strong> soot and carbon deposits produced by the combustion of fuel, which enter the crankcase via the clearance between the piston rings and the cylinder (blow-by).<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Metal particles:<\/strong> generated by friction between mechanical parts, they act as an abrasive that accelerates wear if they are not trapped.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Moisture and condensation:<\/strong> particularly during cold starts, water vapour can condense in the oil and promote internal corrosion.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Unburned fuel:<\/strong> in the event of poor combustion or frequent cold starts, traces of fuel can dilute the oil and reduce its lubricating properties.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>External contaminants<\/strong> \u2013 such as dust, sludge or various particles \u2013 may enter the system during maintenance operations.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n<div class=\"Intro\" data-component-id=\"Intro\">\n    <div class=\"Intro-wrapper\">\n                <div class=\"Intro-image\">\n            <div class=\"Image\" data-component-id=\"image\">\n                <picture>\n                    <img class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/contenthub.hifi-filter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Intro-oil-change-maintenance.webp\" width=\"1440\"\n                        height=\"800\" alt=\"\" draggable=\"false\">\n                <\/picture>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"Intro-text\"><strong>Contaminated oil gradually loses its properties.<\/strong> It lubricates less effectively, does not dissipate heat as well and can itself become a cause of wear. Hence the importance of an effective oil filter and regular replacement.<\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"Introduction\" data-component-id=\"Introduction\">\n    <h3 class=\"AppTitle h1 theme-reverse\"><\/h3>\n    <h2 class=\"AppTitle h1 theme-highlight\">Oil filter: protects the engine<\/h2>\n    <div class=\"AppText\">The engine oil filter acts as a barrier between airborne contaminants and the engine\u2019s sensitive components. The lower the figure, the finer the filtration.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Retention capacity:<\/strong> the amount of contaminants that the filter can capture before becoming saturated.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The type of filter media: cellulose, synthetic or a combination of both; each material offers different properties in terms of efficiency, pressure resistance and service life.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>The structure of the filter media:<\/strong> the media is usually pleated in order to maximise the filtration surface area within a compact space. The larger the filtration surface area, the greater the filter\u2019s retention capacity and the lower the pressure drop, whilst minimising the space required.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Integrated valves:<\/strong> depending on the model and circuit design, the filter may incorporate a non-return valve, which prevents oil from draining out during stoppages, and a safety bypass valve, which opens if the filter becomes saturated to maintain lubrication even in such circumstances.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nApart from its technical specifications, a filter will only protect the engine effectively if it is suitable for the application and replaced at the right time.<\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"ArticleEdito\" data-component-id=\"ArticleEdito\">\r\n    <div class=\"ArticleEdito-content\">\r\n        <h2 class=\"ArticleEdito-title\">When should the engine oil filter be changed?<\/h2>        <div class=\"ArticleEdito-text AppText AppScrollbar\"><strong>The engine oil filter must be replaced at every oil change, without exception.<\/strong> The reasoning is simple: draining out the used oil to replace it with fresh oil whilst leaving a clogged filter in place is tantamount to immediately contaminating the new oil.\r\n\r\nOil change intervals vary depending on the application and the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations. Depending on the engine, it can be fitted on its own or in pairs in parallel, to increase retention capacity and filtration area.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Cartridge oil filters:<\/strong> only the filter element is replaced, whilst the housing is reused.
