Constantly subjected to high mechanical loads and temperature variations, it relies on a discreet but decisive ally: its oil. Yet an oil only protects properly if it stays clean. This is where filtration comes in, determining component service life, equipment availability and control of maintenance costs.

What is a transmission for?

The transmission adjusts speed, torque or direction of travel to deliver usable motion to the working component. A gearbox selects the ratio suited to operating conditions, a reducer lowers speed while increasing torque, a differential distributes the load between two wheels or two shafts, and a hydrostatic transmission uses hydraulic fluid to transmit power between a pump and a hydraulic motor.

It is found in a wide variety of applications: driving the wheels of a car or an industrial vehicle, moving a conveyor, operating a pump, a crusher or a compressor. It is therefore not a single part, but a set of mechanical or hydraulic solutions that allow a machine to use the energy produced efficiently and to guarantee good operating performance.

The different types of transmission

Depending on the vehicles and machines, several transmission technologies coexist, each with different operating principles.

Mechanical transmissions transmit power through mechanical parts: gears, shafts and clutches. This is the principle found in manual gearboxes, axles and reducers, among others.

Automatic and Powershift transmissions also use gears, but gear changes are automated. Multi-disc clutches, generally hydraulically controlled, allow shifting from one ratio to another without direct input from the driver. Some automatic gearboxes also use a torque converter to transmit power.

Hydrostatic transmissions operate on a different principle: power is transmitted by a pressurised fluid between a pump and a hydraulic motor. This allows speed to be varied smoothly and continuously. It is found in particular on many construction machines, agricultural machinery and material handling equipment.

The role of oil in a transmission

Whatever the type of transmission, oil plays an essential role in its operation. Its first function is to lubricate moving parts in order to reduce friction and wear on gears, bearings, shafts and clutches.

It also contributes to cooling by carrying away part of the heat generated by friction and mechanical loads. In automatic, Powershift or hydrostatic transmissions, its role goes even further: the fluid may be used to control the clutches, actuate certain hydraulic components and, depending on the technology, take a direct part in power transmission.

Finally, oil helps protect components against corrosion and carries particles and wear debris to the filtration devices. It must therefore retain its properties despite the heavy loads, temperature variations and stresses to which the transmission is subjected.

        <picture>

        </picture>

Components subjected to heavy stresses

Gears, bearings, shafts, plain bearings, seals, clutch discs, hydraulic pumps or motors: all of them work under load, exposed to speed variations, shocks, vibrations and high temperatures, which can exceed 90°C in some hydrostatic circuits in continuous operation. In mobile applications, frequent starts, braking phases and impacts further increase these stresses across the entire circuit.

These loads naturally generate wear. Fine metal particles and debris form at contact surfaces, often between a few microns and a few tens of microns, a size large enough to damage the tight clearances between moving parts. External contaminants can also enter the system during maintenance operations or when topping up the oil.

Once in the fluid, these particles scratch surfaces, disrupt the lubricating film or clog certain passages. Moisture is an equally serious risk: beyond a certain threshold, water promotes oxidation, corrosion and loss of lubricating film effectiveness. Fluid cleanliness is therefore paramount and decisive for protecting mechanical components and the operating safety of the machine.

        <picture>

        </picture>

Filtration, guarantor of fluid cleanliness

Its essential role is to continuously filter the particles and debris suspended in the oil, in order to maintain this cleanliness throughout the life of the fluid. By retaining them, it breaks the wear cycle, in which every particle that is not captured generates new ones. By limiting this contamination, it also preserves the properties of the oil and the effectiveness of the lubricating film that protects surfaces in contact.

The benefit is measured over the whole life of the machine: better-protected components, a fluid that keeps its properties longer, and therefore concrete results: fewer breakdowns and better equipment availability.

        <picture>

        </picture>

When and how should a transmission filter be replaced?

Replacing a transmission filter must above all follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, defined according to the type of transmission, the oil used and the operating conditions. The choice of part number must also take into account the dimensions, thread and specifications specific to each model. In intensive use, with heavy loads, high temperatures, a dusty environment or frequent cycles, intervals may be shortened.

The filter is generally replaced when the transmission fluid is changed, in order to start again with clean oil and a new filter element. On spin-on models, correct tightening prevents leaks and preserves the sealing of the circuit. The work must be carried out carefully to avoid introducing any contaminants into the circuit.

A clogged filter, heavily contaminated oil or an abnormal presence of particles may also justify early replacement and should prompt a search for the source of the contamination.

        <picture>

        </picture>

“The transmission is often one of the most expensive components of a machine.
