Boat maintenance and filtration guide

In the merchant navy, whether for general cargo ships, container ships, bulk carriers or oil tankers, the sea and the salt are formidable enemies for this equipment and the marine engines on board. These engines, installed in the hulls of heavy, energy-hungry vessels, use diesel. No type of system is immune to contamination, which can lead to costly breakdowns and difficult repairs on the high seas.
It is therefore essential to use a large number of filters to protect these systems, as well as the marine environment and people, from the pollution they emit. However, using filters alone is not enough; it is crucial to maintain them regularly. This should become an essential routine after every sea trip and during winter storage.

HIFI FILTER® provides all the essential filters for maintaining your boat.

Fuel filters

As in all applications, fuel filters preserve fuel quality. They prevent impurities and sometimes water in the tank from contaminating the fuel, thus preventing damage to engine components. By ensuring efficient combustion, these filters optimise engine performance and reduce fuel consumption. For extra protection, a pre-filter can be added to further improve combustion quality. Regular replacement of these filters ensures your boat runs at optimum efficiency and extends engine life.

H-AIR washable air filter

Unlike standard air filters, the H-AIR FILTER® range is washable and reusable, offering a lifespan generally equal to that of your boat. This range uses a cotton media that allows greater airflow, increasing engine power and torque. Despite this increased airflow, H-AIR FILTER® filters are designed with four layers of oiled cotton fibre that effectively filter and protect the boat's engine system. By being washable and reusable, these filters are more durable than standard disposable filters, with a maintenance interval that varies according to conditions of use.

Water filters for cooling circuits

Seawater filters are essential for marine engine cooling systems, whether direct or indirect. In a direct cooling system, the drawn-in seawater circulates directly through the engine, while in an indirect system the heat from the coolant is transferred to the seawater via an exchanger. These filters remove unwanted particles and debris from the water, protecting the cooling system and preventing clogging of the pipes.

Hydraulic filtration

Hydraulic power is widely used on boats because of its ability to provide high force and precise control. Among the main applications of hydraulic power on a boat are the steering system, where rudders are often operated hydraulically, particularly on large ships. Lifting and handling systems, such as cranes and winches used to load and unload cargo, also rely on hydraulic power. Doors and ramps, such as those used for vehicle access on ferries and ro-ro vessels, often use hydraulic systems to open and close. HIFI FILTER® offers not only filters, but also hydraulic accessories to ensure optimum performance and efficient maintenance of these systems on board ships.

Ventilation, heating and air conditioning

HIFI FILTER® also offers filtration solutions for ventilation, heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These filters are essential for ensuring clean, good-quality air on board, which contributes to the comfort and health of the boat's occupants.

Engine maintenance and wintering on board

Regular maintenance and the use of quality filters are essential for prolonging the life of your equipment and ensuring trouble-free sailing. Follow the manufacturers' recommendations and adapt your maintenance to the sailing conditions to get the most out of your equipment.
For on-board engines, checks are essential, including flushing with fresh water, changing the oil and filters, and inspecting the lubrication, cooling and fuel systems. It is also important to check the belts, hoses, fittings, propeller and turbine.
By following these recommendations, you will prevent premature ageing of the engine and keep your equipment in perfect working order.
