The air filter: a vital part of the engine

The role of the air filter

An essential part of the engine, the air filter removes dust and other impurities from the air before they reach the vehicle's intake system. In other words, it maintains good air quality, which is essential for fuel combustion. By blocking these contaminants, it also protects the rings, pistons, liners and turbo from premature wear and extends the life of your engine.
💡 The more powerful an engine is, the more air it requires. For example, in one year, a truck will absorb 2,600,000 m3 of air! As the amount of air consumed increases, so does the risk of contamination and the air filter is vital to the engine. With this product, you maintain the performance of the engine system and protect its parts. That is why at HIFI FILTER® we pay particular attention to the manufacture of our air filters.

What are the different types of air filters?

The dry air filter

Dry air filters are the most commonly used. They are installed in a housing and come in the form of a cartridge or a panel. Depending on the model of your vehicle, this box may contain an additional protection: if the main filter fails, a safety filter will temporarily retain the dust. This protects the engine parts until the air filter can be replaced quickly.

How does an air filter work in practice? The operation is simple: the contaminated air passes through a pleated cellulose medium. This retains the particles and the purified air reaches the intake system. Each HIFI FILTER® model is adapted to your vehicle and offers an adapted filtration threshold. ⚠️Depending on the age of your vehicle, the housing of a cartridge filter will be different. Axial sealing cartridge housings are frequently installed on older vehicles. On newer vehicles, radial sealing air filter housings are mainly used.

High efficiency air filter

These models are up to 99.97% efficient. How do they do it? Thanks to their configuration. A pre-filtration system retains a large portion of the dust, then a high efficiency filter cartridge captures the last impurities. Compared to other products, these products also offer a larger filtration surface. In other words, with a high efficiency filter, the quantity and quality of air delivered to the combustion chamber is superior, offering optimal engine protection and performance.

The oil bath filter

This type of air filter is mainly installed on older vehicles. Here are the details of how it works: the air, loaded with particles, passes through a central tube to reach an oil pan. Thanks to the viscosity of the oil, the impurities are captured. The air flow continues to a filter mass (made of metal, PPI foam or cocolatex), which is responsible for retaining the oily residues.

With an efficiency of 95%, an oil bath filter is not suitable for modern machines. Why not? The increased performance of these machines is accompanied by an increase in their sensitivity to contaminants. It is therefore essential to install a filter with a higher efficiency.

When should I replace my air filter?

An air filter can only guarantee optimal protection for your vehicle if the maintenance interval is respected.
When replacing an air filter, rely on the manufacturer's recommendations or on the clogging indicator (mechanical or electrical) if there is one. According to the manufacturers' recommendations, change your filter every year. On a mechanical indicator, if its piston turns red, replace your filter. If the indicator is electrical, change your filter when an orange light appears on your dashboard indicating a problem with the air filter.
For oil-bath filters, the oil should be changed, cleaned and replenished ideally every 50 hours.
In a very dusty environment, your air filters will become saturated more quickly and need to be replaced more often. But how do you know when a filter is dirty? If the filter is clogged or worn out, the quantity and quality of the air delivered will be reduced. As a result, the engine will not be supplied with enough air and combustion will be impaired. If this happens, there are several symptoms that can alert you:
  • ✅ Excessive fuel consumption
  • ✅ Reduced engine performance
  • ✅ Black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe
  • ✅ The clogging indicator indicates a problem with the air filter

In other words, lack of maintenance leads to expensive and sometimes irreparable damage. It is therefore essential to keep your air filter in good working order to ensure the safety of your engine.
⚠️ Blowing or tapping your air filter is not recommended. Cleaning your filter yourself to remove dirt or particles will result in a loss of efficiency and may damage the filter.

Washable high performance filters

Unlike standard air filters, the H-AIR FILTER range is washable.
Fitted in particular on a racing car or in the navy, the H-AIR FILTER® product range offers three major advantages:

  • INCREASED POWER: With a cotton media, this range differs from standard cellulose filters. Why? Because this material allows a greater flow of air to pass through, thus increasing the engine's power and torque.
  • HIGH PROTECTION: Although the incoming air flow is substantial, this high-performance model maintains excellent efficiency. Four layers of oiled cotton fiber protects your vehicles engine system.
  • LESS WASTE: Unlike standard disposable filters, the H-AIR FILTER® line is washable, reusable and lasts about as long as your vehicle. Generally, cleaning is performed after 7,000 to 10,000 km, or every 6 months. However, this maintenance interval varies depending on your environment and its dust concentration. For more details on the maintenance of these filters, feel free to read the complete description, available in their original packaging.

The HIFI FILTER® motor air range: filters and accessories

Whatever your vehicle: a construction excavator, a tractor or a passenger car, find your air filter at HIFI FILTER®. Take advantage of this opportunity to reinforce your existing filtration with our range of cyclonic pre-filters. Standard or self-cleaning, they block large particles before the intake line and prevent rapid clogging of your air filter and premature wear of the components. Other accessories from the air engine range are also available such as maintenance indicators, fittings, flanges, etc.
